The traditional way. Our style. Our way.

HC Cover Concept 1

I really have short attention span.^^;

A cover concept for Hallow Creak. Characters (starting above, and left to right): Nina Fryte, Scarecrow, Witch.

Its a long story.

At least now we have a final look for Nina. Most of her scenes in random illustrations depict her sleeping or hidden.

WIP: Character designs

Along with BGs and the script, also worked on characters and storyboarding.

Above image is an old drawing from 2007 or so. Can't remember. My sis has been hankering me to use this as reference. It was something I thought I'd try out, different from my usual style. Turns out she liked it.

Concept for one of our OCs. He's called Shoun. One character who's role in every story revision has been changed over and over again.

Plus, my sis bought me coloured leads. Thought I'd try it out and there I went doing a couple of sheets, mostly scribbles. She wanted me to do lean concepts of the guys, and an equally lean yet curvy female characters. Then I asked her, "What about the boobs?"

Storyboard format

This is our storyboard where the marketplace (previous post) was an important scene that set the story to having the main character introduced.

Storyboard format is self made, gathered from different format ideas by other manga artists who shared how they make theirs.

I have a tendency to misplace my scripts, so I created a format where the script is already included in the storyboard --- side-by-side. Other artists have their scripts and storyboard separate from each other for bigger drawing space as they claimed.

Used to write the script in a notebook, any size will do, but the paneling and page concepts are all doodled at the corners or an any available space.^^;

So it turns out into one BIG mess.

My storyboard is bound into one large notebook..... now I just have to find it....

Making BGs

I fail at it.... PERIOD.

But that doesn't mean I'd stop there. XD
I found alternatives.

Browsing the net randomly can give you a vast deal of ideas when in a slump. A single word in the search bar can give you a lot of possibilities when you use you imagination.

There's a market scene in a page which was included in the first chapter. That required a lot of buildings, stalls, crowds, sold goods, etc.

In a couple of minutes, we had five or so market images stored in our hard drive --- they were all modern/present time market places. And we picked the ones with the most visible stalls, buildings and people in it. Market scenes with too many sign boards were discarded.

From the image chose, we had it printed and placed tracing paper over it. We made use of the perspective involved and improvised with the rest. ^__^

Voila! Instant BG~

I need improvement in making extra characters.... I tend not to put enough importance in them.^^;

Unfortunately, this background was put aside. LOL

We were still discussing over the script and in the end we decided to revise it.... again. Hence, this scene will no longer be in it.

It was good practice. Goes to show that I'm out of it and my imagination has just about a few clogs in it and brain function is getting rusty. XP

For other BGs, my sis came up with her own simple ideas. Digitalizing~

Pencil to Digital Lineart

Practice makes perfect!
Well, after a series of clicking the 'undo' shortcut keys and several new canvases..... xp

One of the many drawings I've used to practice lineart with Paint Tool SAI. Above drawing is not mine, it belongs to a friend, Shin Oe. She's a member of Blots Inc. and a contributor for ICI (Ice Cream Indie), Bacolod City's very own independent manga group.

With permission I did the lineart and along with fellow members of the RP where the above characters are some of the increasingly popular OCs, Fallon and Abaven, we caused some mid-level interest in a manga community group in Facebook. There was already a proposal for a yaoi version between roommates Abaven and Xenon taken up by the one of the group's talented artist. Hoping to hear from her soon.^^

The projected pose above is still a dream of Abaven's not yet happening even in his wildest imaginations as Fallon is determined to keep him at arm's length away. LOL

I saw Shin's drawing and got interested with the lines, so I thought why not practice SAI with it? I've gotten hooked to lineart with the program, but I probably won't be using it in future works as a single page takes hours, plus we don't have a computer unit that can uphold a lot a of memory space.

My sis and I will probably stick to doing things traditionally for now except the cover pages. The frontal presentations have to give the desired impact if we want to attract attention to our works.^^

Hoping in the year 2012.... well, just good luck to the both of us, especially now that our older brother is determined to get us drunk as he failed to do in Christmas eve after all those shots. XD
